Adam Cook: "Super Mario Maker feels like the game Nintendos Wii U was designed for. Its harsh to wonder if fortunes could have been different if it had been a launch title, but its also a stark reminder that Nintendo is out there taking risks. An online third-person shooter involving Squid came earlier this year, and now we have something that youd assume was some crazy ROM-hack. Only its not. This is real, and brilliant. Its the possibility of a thousand new Super Mario World levels, hundreds of mini-sequels to Super Mario Bros. 3. Its the chance to challenge yourself and try to match the master of platforming with his own tool-set. Its magnificent, its crazy, and its for everyone to enjoy. Truly inclusive, Super Mario Maker is the game youll smile the most at this year, and worth every penny."

When I turned 5 years old, my family bought me a Nintendo Entertainment System with Super Mario Bros. More than 25 years later, Nintendo has crafted an exquisite ode to its premier franchise that has reminds me why I fell in love with these games in the first place.
Super Mario Maker (which comes out September 11 for the Wii U) is the latest 2D platformer starring the Italian plumber. But it is also (sort of) all of the 2D Mario games. Thats because it gives players a capable and easy-to-understand set of tools to build and share their own levels. Its an idea weve seen before in releases like LittleBigPlanet, but Nintendo is known for putting a level of polish on its products that few others ever reach. Is that the case here as well? Absolutely.

Polygon:
In a perfect world, every video game franchise would have its own Super Mario Maker.
By giving the keys to the Mushroom Kingdom to players in such an approachable way, Super Mario Maker does something beyond the scope of most user-generated content-heavy games. Sure, it allows you to make some truly bonkers levels levels that, at their most audacious, completely rewrite the rules of the Mario canon. But what's more impressive is how it holistically teaches you what goes into making a Mario game, and just how demanding that design process has always been.

Everyone is a co-developer in Super Mario Maker.
Nintendo knows how to make an expertly crafted Mario game. The company excels in level design and mechanical variety on a game-to-game basis, and each new entry in the series showcases the company's creativity. But what happens when Nintendo takes the tools used to make Mario games and puts them in the hands of players? It results in Super Mario Maker, a special game that emphasizes the creativity of an entire community. Best of all, it's the kind of experience that will only improve with time.
